Puritan ideals are still embedded in modern day America. When Hester had her affair, the people of her town considered it despicable and Hester was thought of as "naughty". Commiting adultery in the present day is not as big of a deal as it was when Hester did it, a person will not have a "brand of hot iron" embedded in their skin. They may not be punished the same but if somene was to commit adultery right now they would be looked down opun and would be shunned just like Hester was. Another ideal that we have in common with puritans is the concept of working hard and getting ahead because of your hard work. Hester devoted herslf to helping out with her community, she gave food and clothing to the poor even though she didnt have much to give. I believe she did this to even out the sin she commited or in other words she worked hard to get ahead. This is very common in the present day, people will work hard until they get where they want to be in life.

One of the ideals from the Puritan period that is still seen today is the idea of a relationship without flaws. Back in the Puritan period, a woman was supposed to be very loyal to her significant other, always being by his side and doing his biddings. A relationship like this would be classified as a "perfect relationship". However, if one of the persons in the relationship were to commit adultery, there would be shaming and punishment, and most likely a loss of respect. In today's world, the definition of a "perfect relationship" is much different. A "perfect relationship" by today's standards is one where both persons in the relationship help and encourage each other, and have love for each other. However, when one person in the relationship cheats (commits adultery) usually love and trust is lost.

One Puritanical ideal from The Scarlet Letter that is still seen today is the idea of sin. A sin is a immoral act considered to be a transgression against divine law. The scarlet letter attached to Hester Prynne's clothing is a punishment for committing adultery, which is a sin, both now and then. The scholar/doctor says this punishment is just because she will be "a living sermon against sin." Another ideal from the puritans was that they believed each person should have an intense spiritual relationship with god, which is similar to todays protestant religion. The Puritans also formed the first school in 1635, near Boston. In 1639, Harvard college was founded. By 1647 Massachusetts law said every town of fifty families or more must have an elementary school. Their ideal of "predestination" keep all Puritans constantly working hard in "this life" so as to be "chosen" for the next (eternal) life, still is seen in many different religions.

Some of the laws, ideals, and regulations are still seen today in the 21st century. People that commit adultery are still looked down upon to this day. Although committing adultery isn't illegal it is still still looked at negatively. Back in the Puritan period committing a crime like adultery was punishable by death. Present day affairs are handled in a way that the community would gossip about them and spread rumors. This is unlike the community back in the Puritan period who made comments about how Hester should've received the death penalty for what she did. "At the very least, they should've put the brand of hot iron on Hester Prynne's forehead."

An Ideal from the Puritan period that remains constant is Adultery. Back then, it was a punishable act. People would shun you and might even put you in jail or even worse, death sentence. Now in the 21st century. It is not even a surprise when someone commits adultery. Our generation is so used to this act. It is not a punishable act at all. No one goes to jail. Very few get shunned by people. Also another ideal is that in the Scarlet Letter, they expect relationships to be perfect and to last, in the 21st century that does not happen as often as it used too.

Our constitution is based off the moral values the Puritans had back in the time period the Scarlet Letter was written. And all of our laws come from the constitution. In our time period we do the exact same thing when someone is arrested or on for a trial, because anyone can access their photos online and they are normally posted in the newspaper. The Puritans were very religious so all the laws that were in the bible are strictly enforced upon, like committing the sin of adultery. This is not illegal today but it is frowned upon by many people. Especially the churches of today. Well in the book Hester has to wear an A which allows everyone to see the sin she committed. When people go to prison today they have to wear a bright orange suit. Which is meaning they committed a crime. Most of the laws we still have today that the Puritans had were not to kill, and not to steal. These are to big main laws that were passed down to 21st America.

Some Puritan ideals are still seen in todays society. The most clear one is that it is wrong to commit adultery. Puritans were much much harsher on women that committed adultery than people are today. In the time of the Scarlet Letter, public humiliation was considered a proper punishment. The women were always looked upon as having committed a sin. The men were not punished as harshly. We see this in the way that the people of the town didn't try very hard to find out who Hester committed adultery with. They just went after her. In todays society, it is illegal to marry more than one person. Men are still not viewed as harshly as women who commit adultery. Women are now called names and shamed for what they did while men are just left alone the majority of the time.

The Scarlet Letter revolves around the ideal of adultery, adultery although not punishable in the 21st century as would in the Scarlet Letter is still viewed in the same negative way. In the Scarlet Letter publicly embarrasses Hester while in today's society a divorce is more likely to occur. In many ways the sexuality determines the outcome in today's society and past, for example the man is as much fault as the women in this affair but only the women is publicly humiliated. In today's society women especially in the business field have a more difficult time of progressing in rank than a man, wages are also an issue with the same outcome.

One of the ideas, laws/and regulations from the Puritan period in "The Scarlet Letter" that has carried on into today's 21st century mannerism is that of a relationship with another. In today's society as well as in the past relationships are a key thing that when broken through thing like adultery and sinning it can cause hardships whether they be societal or personal. Though this aspect has deffinatly changed throughout the years, we dont make the people who cheat wear a scarlet "A" across their chest or sentence them to death, but rather to day we take a less harsh approach to adultery in the ways of the law. Those who cheat will not face the crimes of the law but will be criticized for what they have done, much like Hester was in the novel.

One Purintanical ideal still seen in our society is the ideal of being faithful. Staying faithful still is a major roll in our 21 century relationships. Many of times not being faithful can lead to divorces. You also saw in the Scarlet Letter how much a of a problem it was when Hester wasn't faithful. She was forced to wear a scarlet letter on her chest at all times, and she was accepted by the community in many ways, people would talk bad about her, and gets would even tease her.

The Puritans ideals and the 21st century ideals about marriage are similar in some ways, and different in others. The Puritans only allowed marriage to one person and that person had to be the love of your life. In addition, divorce was not allowed and adultery was perhaps the biggest sin a person could commit. In today’s society, marriage is also a sacred thing but it is not a sin to get a divorce and you are allowed to have more than one love of your life. It seems that the Puritan way of life relies heavily on only having one person alongside you, and that is not anywhere near how society lives today. However, the idea of a true love still does exist regardless of how many people it takes someone to find that person in today’s society. In addition, adultery is still regarded as a sin although light is shed on the acts a lot more now than it ever was in the Puritan society because of just how common it has come to be. The Puritan ways of love and marriage have been adapted to the century we live in today and even though there are some major differences, we can thank them for shaping some of the ideals that we live by today.

Many Puritans ideals, laws, and regulations are still seen in the society of 21st century America. One ideal would be that men are more superior to women, in The Scarlet Letter Hester is the one who got punished not the man. Another thing is that if you cheat it is still looked down upon, and when you cheat you are called hurtful names and you are humiliated. In the book Hester shunned and looked down upon by the people of the town so she wanted to leave. She was also publicly humiliated by having to wear the "A" on her chest.

In some parts of the world people still follow the laws and/or regulations. For example in the Middle East a women would be at least banished if she were caught having a relationship with someone that she was not married too even though in that culture men are allowed to have more than one wife. But what about the USA? Cheating on your husband, wife, girlfriend of boyfriend is made out to seem like it's not that big of deal. Now you can just get a divorce and go back to dating multiple people. Relationships don't always work out and society is still on the idea of a flawless relationship without any imperfections. When an individual commits adultery now, they are thought of and treated differently. The individual doesn't have to wear a special symbol but instead carries a different feeling of possibly guilt and neglect. When Hester commits adultery, she is punished by wearing the scarlet letter on her chest and the society banishes her.

One puritan value that still exists in 21st century culture is the thought that we should remain faithful towards our spouse. Adultery is still considered just as wrong today as it was in puritan culture. Also, the inequality between men and women still exists. Like in puritan society, women today are more harshly punished for adultery than men. In the book Hester had to wear the scarlet letter and face the consequences of her action, while the Reverend did not.

From the Puritan ideals of the 17th century and the ideals of the 21st century that are the same are that people still frown upon you when you have a child and are not married before you had the child
