Hesters American dream is to stop having people think about what she had done to become a sinner. She wants to be known for something better not as an adulterer and she strives to do that.

In the beginning of the Scarlet Letter, Hester is seen and known now as a sinner by having a child out of wedlock but her dream before that was to be equal by others in her community. All of that changed when she had her child, Pearl and when she had to wear the letter "A". I think after that all she wanted was to have her freedom back especially when she was in jail. She wanted to be equal with everyone else but as the story goes on she doesn't want to be reminded of her wearing the letter "A" and the crime that she committed; what she wants is to move away with Dimmesdale and Pearl and to be with her new family and be free.

I think Hester's American dream is to be free of the sins she's done. At first to Hester it was all about working hard to achieve your goals. Which is what society thought, this meant you were a good person. Later on Hester realizes the freedom for her to be unbound by the scarlet letter is her true wish and dream.
