In the story, a woman named Hester has to were a Scarlet "A" on her because she was an Adulteress, she is so by having sexual relations with a man who is not her husband and his name is, Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale, who also wears the letter. In the beginning of the book many people look down upon her for being an Adulteress but she is proud of it and laces the letter with gold because she is proud of the outcome, her child Pearl. As the story nears the end, the letter turns less into a hateful insignia and more of a symbol of how she is like an "Angel".

Hester's Scarlet Letter symbolizes the crime that she committed adultery, during 17th century Boston was viewed as a sin by the church. I works its way in to the book by her being shamed and scorned by the local towns people, eventually Hester overcomes these acts of social exile. Over time the meaning of the scarlet letter changes from adult-er to Able because of her kind, thoughtful nature and willingness to heal the sick. Even though she becomes much more accepted by the people she still fells cut off, trapped in "sphere of her own".

The scarlet letter brings shame to the sinner Hester Prynne for life. In the Scarlet Letter, Hester had to wear an "A" on her bosom which means adultery. She wore it because she was being punished for having a child out of wedlock. The letter signifies that the person committed adultery or a person also being a sinner and in this case woman were not a loud to have a child with a man without being married or else you would be punished and go to prison. Hester was the wife of Roger Chillingworth who sent her to Massachusetts but never returned so he was heard to be lost. Hester had an affair with Boston's minister, Arthur Dimmesdale and she had a baby named Pearl out of the affair. This was the sin that she committed. The scarlet letter functioned in the novel when it showed people how terrible of a person she was and they continued to judge her tremendously when they saw the latter "A". I think it's meaning changes overtime when towards the end of the novel people started to stop judging her and thinking she was a bad person when they realized who she was. |

The Scarlet letter in the story is an A put on Hester's clothes to be worn as a constant reminder of her sin. The A is supposed to stand for adultery. What makes this A so big and noticeable, is that it is right in the middle of her chest and hard to cover up. Hester's scarlet latter changes over time to a symbol of how strong and able she is to do all things.

With all of the cruel talk and doubtful glances Hester had received, she endured it all and through her mistakes. Even though she was still not happy with herself and was "determined to redeem her error" later on.
The meaning of the symbol was originally negative, but transformed into a positive sign as the mistakes in the story were recognized and dealt with.
